It's the week two college football roundup on St. Joseph Post, with some exciting ones this week.&nbsp; Let's jump right into it

Mizzou comes back to snatch victory in renewed Border War rivalry

The Missouri Tigers scored the first touchdown of the game, before giving up 21 unanswered points to the Kansas Jayhawks, from there though, Mizzou outscored Kansas 36-10, on way to a 42-31 win in the first Border War showdown since 2011.

After the Tigers forced the Jayhawks into a three and out on the first drive of the game, Missouri drove down the field in five plays to put up the first points of the game, Ahmad Hardy breaking a 32 yard rush for a touchdown, the extra point by redshirt freshman kicker&nbsp;Robert Meyer though was blocked.&nbsp; Meyer kicked in place of Blake Craig who will miss the season after tearing his ACL against Central Arkansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas answered on their next drive taking the lead finishing a seven play drive with a precise 15 yard touchdown pass to&nbsp;DeShawn Hanika, taking the lead after converting the extra point.&nbsp; The lead would be extended quickly on the defensive side by the Jayhawks on a fumble six, Kansas defensive back Austin Alexander recovering a fumble by Missouri quarterback Beau Pribula and taking it 28 yards for a score.

Trailing 14-6, the Mizzou offense went three and out on their next drive, managing just one yard, punting the ball back to Kansas and the Jayhawks responded with another touchdown, a six play drive, ending with Jalon Daniels rushing in from one yard out to give Kansas a 21-6 lead at the end of one quarter of the rivalry matchup.&nbsp;

The second quarter looked like a totally different game for Missouri, the Tigers using a long 15 play drive to cut into the Kansas lead with a touchdown, Pribula throwing a three yard touchdown pass to Kevin Coleman Jr.&nbsp; On the first Kansas offensive play of the next drive, it was the Mizzou defense this time getting points on the board, Zion Young coming off the edge unblocked and sacking Daniels and forcing a fumble that rolled back into the endzone and was recovered by the Jayhawks Kobe Baynes for a safety, cutting the lead to 21-15.

A 17 play drive ended with Meyer's hitting his first collegiate field goal from 25 yards out to cut the lead to three, and then with no time left on the clock, both teams headed to the halftime break tied at 21 after Meyer hit a 20 yard field goal at the end of the half as the Tigers scored 15 unanswered points.&nbsp; In the second quarter, Missouri outgained Kansas in yards 186 to -21.

Missouri started the second half with the ball, and after a 10 play drive ended with a turnover on downs, Kansas responded with an 11 play drive for a field goal to take the lead back&nbsp;Laith Marjan hitting a 26 yard field goal.&nbsp; In another long drive though, which the third quarter was filled with, the Tigers put together 12 plays, driving 75 yards, where Pribula completed an 11 yard touchdown pass to tight end Brett Norfleet, giving Missouri a 28-24 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Jayhawks and Tigers exchanged three and outs and punts to start the fourth quarter, and after Kansas got the ball back the Jayhawks again took the lead as Daniels again connected with Hanika, this time for a six yard score.&nbsp; From there it was all Missouri, Pribula finishing off a 10 play drive with his second touchdown pass to Norfleet, a pass on 4th and 1 that Norfleet took 27 yards to the endzone for a 35-31 lead.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another Jayhawks punt gave Missouri the ball back, and the Tigers needed just three plays, and three runs by Jamal Roberts to put the stamp on the game, Roberts breaking free for a 63 yard touchdown run.&nbsp; On the ensuing Kansas drive, Daylan Carnell picked off Daniels, dragging his left toe along the turf as he dove out of bounds for the game ending interception.&nbsp;

For Missouri, Pribula was 30-for-39 with 334 yards passing and three touchdowns.&nbsp; Roberts rushed 13 times for 143 yards with a touchdown, while Hardy rushed 25 times for 112 yards with a score.&nbsp; Coleman caught 10 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, Norfleet had seven catches for 76 yards and two scores.&nbsp;

Daniels was 18-for-30 for 223 yards through the air with two touchdowns and one interception, also rushing 10 times for 17 yards and a score.&nbsp; Daniel Hishaw Jr had six carries for 11 yards.&nbsp; Hanika caught six passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns, while Levi Wentz had two catches for 56 yards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Up next, the Missouri Tigers (2-0) will host&nbsp;Louisiana on Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff will be at 3pm and the game will air on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.&nbsp; The game will NOT be carried on KFEQ (680AM/95.3FM) due to Royals baseball.

Kansas (2-1) meanwhile will open up Big 12 play, returning to&nbsp;David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium to host West Virginia on Saturday.&nbsp; A kickoff time has yet to be announced by the conference.

Northwest gets road win over Washburn for first win of McMenamin era

 The Northwest Missouri State University football team used a complete team effort to stifle the Washburn Ichabods on the road for a 34-7 victory at Yager Stadium.&nbsp; It marked the first win as a Bearcat for new head coach John McMenamin.

Northwest started the scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Chris Ruhnke to Jackson Miller. Kicker Mo Alwaely though the extra point wide right. The Bearcats extended the lead when Ruhnke hit Dominic Myers for an 18-yard touchdown strike late in the opening quarter.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Bearcat defense limited Washburn to 14 yards of offense in the first half and only one first down. Washburn rushed for -19 yards in the opening 30 minutes. Northwest tallied 211 total yards and 13 first downs in the first half, leading Washburn at halftime 13-0.

The Bearcats got back onto the scoreboard extending their lead in the third quarter, Myers scoring his first career rushing touchdown on a 13-yard carry.&nbsp; Northwest defensive back Jackson Torry forced a fumble and it was recovered by Michael Harrison at the 23-yard line late in the third quarter. Zechariah Owens hit Gannon Gragert for a 17-yard touchdown pass with Northwest facing and fourth-and-4 on the opening play of the fourth quarter for Gragert's first touchdown reception as a Bearcat, giving Northwest a 27-0 lead.&nbsp;

The Ichabods ended the shutout attempt when Washburn quarterback Justin Lewis hit D.J. Bell for a 69-yard touchdown pass.&nbsp; Northwest tacked on its final score of the game when Quincy Torry carried it in from a yard out. Torry's first collegiate touchdown capped a 13-play, 77-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes of the fourth quarter.

Ruhnke was 17-for-27 with 190 yards through the air with one touchdown and one interception.&nbsp; Owens was 9-for-12 with 59 yards passing and two touchdowns&nbsp; Owens also added 12 carries for 71 yards on the ground.&nbsp; Myers rushed 11 times for 50 yards and a score, he was also the leading receiver with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.

After playing its first two games on the road, Northwest will play its first home contest of the season onSaturday. Northwest will play host to Texas A&amp;M-Kingsville in a non-conference game at Bearcat Stadium. Kick is set for 1:30 p.m.

Ravens comeback attempt held off as top seed Grandview prevails

 Top-ranked Grand View University won the turnover battle as they held off upset-minded Benedictine in the second Heart-UEN Clash of the Week.

The No. 4-ranked Ravens outscored the Vikings 17-13 in the second half, but couldn't overcome the 14 points that Grand View scored off two of the Ravens three turnovers as Grand View earned a 27-24 win.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Vikings found the end zone twice in the second quarter,&nbsp;Jackson Waring throwing a eight yard touchdown pass early in the quarter to Aisea Toki and  Dalten Van Pelt capping off a 10 play drive late in the frame with a four yard rushing score, before Benedictine scored on a one yard rush from Xavier Ugorgi with nine seconds left in the half to head to the locker room up 14-7 at halftime.

Christian Klobe connected on a 29-yard field goal for Benedictine's only points of the third quarter before Grand View extended their advantage to 21-10, Waring connecting again with Toki on a 29 yard touchdown pass, headed into the fourth quarter. 

The Ravens limited Grand View to a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter while scoring on a pair of passing touchdowns of their own. Jackson Dooley connected on two touchdown passes to Tanner Zimmerman in the fourth quarter of 60 yards and six yards, the second of which came with just over one minute left in the game and pulled the Ravens within three points.

&nbsp;Dooley went 24 of 39 for 324 yards but finished with two interceptions to go along with his two touchdowns. Zimmerman finished with 97 yards on five receptions with the two touchdowns. Ugorgi had 66 yards rushing on 17 carries with a score. 

Benedictine returns home on Saturday to celebrate their annual Stars &amp; Stripes Day at 1 p.m. against Graceland University.&nbsp;

Kansas State struggles to capitalize on opportunities falling to Army

Army quarterback Cale Hellums accounted for three touchdowns that included a 14-yard touchdown run with 2:52 left to help Army beat Kansas State 24-21.

The Wildcats built a lead through the first half with 13 unanswered points.&nbsp; A 34 yard field goal from Luis Rodriguez was the lone score of the first quarter, before Avery Johnson connected with Jaron Tibbs for a 32 yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to extend the lead.&nbsp; &nbsp;Late in the first half, Rodriguez knocked through a 38 yard field goal to move the Kansas State lead to 13-0

Hellums tossed a two yard touchdown pass to Brady Anderson to end the first half for his first score of the game to cut into the lead, sending the teams to the locker room at the halftime break with a 13-7 score.&nbsp; But coming after halftime, Hellums gave Army the lead late in the third quarter, rushing for a one yard score.

The Wildcats special teams unit got the Kansas State the lead back near the end of the third quarter, a 99 yard kickoff return by Bryce Noernberg going for the touchdown, with a two point conversion pass from Johnson to Tibbs being complete making it a one possession game.&nbsp;

Army cut the lead to 21-17 with 10:46 left on a 35 yard field goal by Dawson Jones, and then attempted a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff, hoping to avoid another long return. It caromed off a K-State player and Army recovered on its own 44.&nbsp; On the ensuing drive, Hellums put together a 14 play drive that ended with what would be the game winning score, a 14 yard rushing touchdown by himself.

Kansas State’s final drive ended when Avery Johnson threw an interception just past midfield. It was just the 10th home nonconference loss for Kansas State since 1990.&nbsp;&nbsp;The key for the Black Knights was going six of seven on fourth down.

Johnson finished 15-of-25 passing for 172 yards and threw one touchdown pass. Tibbs finished with five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.&nbsp; On the ground, Joe Jackson had seven carries for 30 yards.

Up next,&nbsp;Kansas State (1-2)play at Arizona on Friday. Even though both teams are in the Big 12, it will be a nonconference game.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 8pm and the game will air on Fox.

Nebraska dominates Akron in shutout victory to stay undefeated

 Dylan Raiola threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns and Emmett Johnson ran for 140 yards and scored three times to lead Nebraska past Akron 68-0.

The Cornhuskers turned in their most prodigious offensive performance against a Bowl Subdivision opponent in more than a decade. They recorded their most points in a game since 2007 and most yards in a game since 2014 with 728 total yards of offense.&nbsp; Nebraska also posted its first shutout since a 33-0 Holiday Bowl win over Arizona in 2009. The Zips, who opened the season with a 10-0 loss to Wyoming at home, were held scoreless for a second straight game.

Johnson broke a 47-yard touchdown run on the game's opening possession, caught a four yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, and ran six yards for a score in the third for his three scores. Johnson was the first Nebraska player with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since Anthony Grant had three straight to open the 2022 season.

Raiola gave way to freshman backup TJ Lateef after he threaded a perfect strike to Dane Key in the end zone for a 47-0 lead in the third quarter.&nbsp;Raiola set the Nebraska record for consecutive completions. After connecting on his final 11 passes against Cincinnati last week, he hit on his first nine against Akron. The 20 completions broke the record of 15 by Dave Humm against Kansas in 1974. 

Akron did have two good chances to score its first points of the season. But Owen Wiley’s 49-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright in the final seconds of the first half, and Riley Van Poppel blocked Wiley’s 33-yard try in the third quarter.

Up next, Nebraska hosts Houston Christian on Saturday.&nbsp; Kickoff is at 11am and the game will air on FS1.

Border War renewed, McMenamin gets first W, Ravens fall to top seed

ANDREW COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Andrew County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by a 72-year-old St. Joseph man was southbound on State Route K one mile south of Amazonia.&nbsp; The motorcycle traveled off the west side of the road, struck a fallen tree, overturned and the driver was ejected.&nbsp;

Andrew County EMS transported the driver to Mosaic Life Care. He was wearing a helmet, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

St. Joseph man injured after motorcycle strikes a tree

BROWN COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a traffic stop in rural Brown County.

Just after 9p.m. September 4, a sheriff's&nbsp; deputy was on routine patrol on U.S. 75 Highway when he encountered a vehicle with only one operating headlight, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

The deputy made contact with the driver, 38-year-old&nbsp; Josiah Williams from Topeka. It was discovered that his drivers license had been revoked.&nbsp; 

The passenger of the vehicle 31-year-old Paige Keefe of Omaha had a $500 Failure to Appear Warrant out of Ford County Kansas.&nbsp; K-9 Carla alerted on the vehicle and cocaine, a scale, baggies and other items of interest were located and taken as evidence.&nbsp;

Three children were also present at the time of stop.

Williams was arrested on requested charges of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Distribution of a Stimulant, Possession of Stimulant, No Drug Tax Stamp, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Keefe was arrested on charges of Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Possession of Stimulant and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

HARRISON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 2:30a.m. Saturday in Harrison County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Kia Teluride driven by a 28-year-old Plattsmouth, Nebraska man was northbound on Route O ten miles north of Blythedale. The SUV was traveling too fast for conditions. The vehicle crossed the center of the road, traveled off the west side of the road, struck some trees and continued down an embankment.

North Missouri EMS transported the driver to Liberty Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

Driver hospitalized after SUV strikes trees

CALDWELL COUNTY— One person was injured in an accident just after 2a.m. Saturday in Caldwell County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Lincoln Navigator driven by a 27-year-old Braymer woman was southbound on SE Sunnyvale Road at SE Tobin Valley Drive. The SUV crossed the T intersection, traveled down an embankment and struck some trees.

Caldwell County ambulance transported the driver to Hedrick Medical Center. The patrol did not report seat belt usage details and they no longer releases names of accident victims.

<a href="https://www.kcur.org/halle-jackson"></a>An allergy to red meat caused by tick bites is on the rise in Kansas and Missouri, public health experts say.

It’s called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/29/lone-star-ticks-increase-climate-crisis" target="_blank">alpha-gal syndrome</a>, a condition that can develop after a bite from a lone star tick. Individuals with the disease can develop a variety of symptoms, including hives, nausea, shortness of breath or anaphylactic shock, two to six hours after eating red meat or other mammal products such as cow’s milk or gelatin.

Dr. Rex Archer, a professor of public health at Kansas City University and former director of the Kansas City Health Department, says the condition is on the rise as a result of climate change. Warmer summers allow tick populations in Kansas and Missouri to thrive.

However, reporting the condition to state and local health officials in Kansas and Missouri isn’t mandatory, which makes it hard to know exactly how many people are impacted.

“This is an extremely underreported disease because, unfortunately, it's not yet mandated by CDC to be reported by states,” Archer told KCUR’s Up To Date. “And many of the states that have the highest prevalence of the tick that can cause or spread this disease are not reporting it or mandating it.”

In Missouri, MU Extension is working to develop education and resources for people with alpha-gal syndrome. The group is currently&nbsp;<a href="https://extension.missouri.edu/news/mu-extension-wants-your-input-on-alpha-gal-syndrome" target="_blank">conducting a survey</a>&nbsp;of people about their experiences.

In Kansas, Missouri, red meat allergies caused by tick bites on rise

This weekend the Pony Express Museum will offer free admission for one day during museum day, with some special history reenactments as well.  

Museum Day will be tomorrow (Sat.) with free admission to the Pony Express Musuem during its normal hours from 9am to 5pm.  History re-enactors will be presenting at the museum from 10am to 4pm.  Re-enactors will also visit the Pony School from 10am to noon, and noon to 2pm. 

On top of that, during the free admission day, the museum encourages everyone to come and see the Native American display, mini quilt arrangement in the children’s play area along with the new animal display. The Hall of Riders also has a new rider James “Bean” Hamilton for people to learn his history.

During the month of September, the St. Joseph Public Library is encouraging you to get out to the library and sign up for a library card.  

September is library card sign up month and the theme this year at the St. Joseph Public Library is "One Card, Endless Possibilities". 

Director Mary Beth Revels says sometimes people might not realize everything the library can offer 

"Sure, we offer books, we offer movies, we offer free Wi-fi, we have computers," Revels tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  "We offer printers, a lot of times people just need something to print and you can come to the library and print it, we also offer all kind of informational databases from genealogy research to homework help and lots of free programs at the library." 

Revels says even in this sort of digital age we are in, the value of libraries continues to grow, because not everyone can afford an Audible subscription. 

"You can come to the library and you can get James Patterson's latest book as a print book, we can get that for you as a large print book, you can get that as an E audio book, you can check it out through the library and listen to it on your phone," Revels explains.  "You can also check it out as an E book." 

Revels says even in the digital age when you can read a book in so many different formats, you can get those at the library, but still more physical books are checked out than digital books. 

Revels says a library card offers so many services to people, including some people might not know about, like available E-content 

"We offer Hoopla, Libby, Boundless, Blackstone Audio, those are all different apps that you can download and use your library card to check out E Books and E Audio Books, sometimes music, sometimes magazines depending on the different app," Revels says.  "Sometimes movies, we check out streaming movies through Kanopy." 

During the month the library is offering prizes to anyone who uses their library card.  You can enter prize drawings at any of the four St. Joseph Public Library locations.

December corn closed down 1 3/4 cents and March corn was down 1 cent. November soybeans closed down 6 cents and January soybeans were down 6 cents. December KC wheat closed down 1 cent, December Chicago wheat was down 1/4 cents, December Minneapolis wheat was down 4 1/4 cents.

Agricultural markets were mostly calm Friday, and for the most part followed weekly trends into the close, featuring reversals off early session gains. Corn futures looked to be heading for a third positive session out of four tries this week before bears regained control by the last hour of trade. Meanwhile, soybean prices fell again following Thursday's impressive afternoon rally. Wheat markets remained limited in terms of upward momentum but were also able to stabilize following Thursday's ugly morning trade which sent prices to new lows. Outside markets to close the week were mostly a negative influence on agriculture, with another round of sluggish jobs data Friday morning sending equities lower and also weighing on energy markets. Also weighing on energies was Thursday's EIA inventory report which showed U.S. crude oil stocks higher week-over-week and year-over-year, as well as the OPEC+ meeting over the weekend. Treasury yields inched higher to close the week with the apparent slowing of the labor market, increasing the likelihood of a rate cut from the Federal Reserve in their meeting later this month.

The live cattle complex continued to etch lower and lower as the market isn't seeing the fundamental support it needs to convince traders that the market's direction should change. Following the trade that developed in the cash market on Thursday, no new cash cattle trade has surfaced thus far, and it's looking like the bulk of this week's business could be done with. So far this week Southern live cattle have traded anywhere from $242 to $243, which is steady to $1.00 higher than last week's weighted average, and Northern dressed cattle have traded at mostly $383, which is $2.00 lower than last week's weighted average.

And again today, the feeder cattle complex was following in the same direction as that of the live cattle market, as even though demand in the countryside remains historic, traders are waving their white flag for the time being and are fixated on working the contracts lower. As time moves closer and closer to the end of September/early October, it will be interesting to see the sheer volume of calves traded at sale barns as more cattle were moved earlier this year.

The momentum that's run with the lean hog complex for the vast majority of the week continued to sustain through Friday's session as the contracts kept trading higher. It is helpful that today, pork cutout values were higher, which is mainly because of the $5.07 increase in the picnic and the $4.13 jump in the loin.

Commodity markets daily recap

The Renewable Fuels Association applauded the California Senate’s passing of a bill that would allow the sale of E15, saying the state is much closer to cleaner fuel use. The Association said the bill moves on to the governor’s desk for approval. Last year, Governor Gavin Newsom said ethanol blends have massive potential and will lower gas prices while keeping the air clean. 

Researchers at the University of California-Berkeley and the U.S. Naval Academy said in a report that California consumers may see up to $2.7 billion in savings every year by having E15 available. California is the only state that doesn’t allow sales of the fuel blend. The analysis also finds that a unit increase in octane level results in a value premium of about 11 cents per gallon. California’s transition from E10 to E15 could save about 13 cents per gallon on average due to the lower carbon intensity of E15.&nbsp;

California senate passes E15 bill

The USDA’s Economic Research Service says net cash farm income, defined as gross cash income minus cash expenses, is forecast to increase by $36.5 billion, or 25 percent, from 2024 to $180.7 billion in 2025 inflation-adjusted dollars. U.S. net farm income is forecast to increase by $48.8 billion, or 37 percent, to $179.8 billion in 2025. Net farm income is a broader measure of farm sector profitability that incorporates non-cash items like changes in inventories, economic depreciation, and gross imputed rental income. 

Most of the projected increase in 2025 corresponds with higher direct government payments to farmers, projected to increase from $10.4 billion in 2024 to $40.5 billion in 2025. The increase is expected largely because of supplemental and ad hoc disaster assistance for farmers and ranchers from the American Relief Act of 2025, which authorized economic assistance payments to producers and payments for losses in 2023 and 2024.&nbsp;

USDA says farm sector profits to grow in 2025

December corn closed up 1 3/4 cents and March corn was up 1 1/2 cents. November soybeans closed up 1 1/2 cents and January soybeans were up 1 1/2 cents. December KC wheat closed down 4 cents, December Chicago wheat was down 2 1/2 cents, December Minneapolis wheat was down 2 3/4 cents.

The bearish start to September continued early Thursday before buyers stepped up by late morning, eventually turning soybean and corn futures slightly higher by the close. Meanwhile, wheat futures remain under heavy pressure but are quickly approaching long-term chart support. For now, with a lack of significant market-moving news traders are opting to trade seasonality, of which 5- and 10-year indices suggest a weak start to September while also suggesting the market may start feeling for a pre-harvest bottom over August and September as well. Outside markets were mixed on Thursday with energies mostly lower, but stock indices recovered from a sluggish restart to trade post Labor Day.

The mundane sideways to somewhat lower chop continued in the live cattle complex, as no further trade has developed in the fed cash cattle market, and traders remain concerned that the market could be overbought. Traders continued with their cautious tone throughout the day as the market didn't see anything wild and unexpected develop yet in terms of fundamental support, and even if the fed cash cattle market were able to trade a tick higher, there's a chance that traders could be numb to positive development. This morning, asking prices are around $244 to $245 in the South, but they are still not fully established in the North. There was a thin movement of cattle that sold yesterday afternoon at $242 in the South, which is steady with last week's weighted average, and some dressed trade was reported in the North at $383 to $385, which is $1.00 to $2.00 lower than last week's weighted average.

In the feeder cattle complex, traders remain uncertain about the market's technical position, the downward trend continued to be the livestock market's theme thus far through Thursday's trade. And once again, this nervousness remains an issue for the market in terms of its position throughout the futures complex, but is not a concern in the countryside as feeder cattle continue to see incredible demand thanks to the continued interest of buyers.

Following Wednesday's sharp sell-off, the lean hog complex has again seemed to find some footing in the marketplace as it's back to trading higher. It's likely that the resistance pressure that caused the market to fall on Wednesday will be a limiting factor for the market any time soon unless fundamental support gains substantial ground and lends traders substantially more support.

 The USDA extended the public comment period for its controversial reorganization plan to September 30. Reports say, that doubles the length of time provided for input on an initiative that has drawn criticism from both Democrats and Republicans since it was unveiled last month. The agency originally released the plan for public comment on July 24 for a period of 30 days. A department webpage that earlier listed the deadline as August 31 now says September 30. 

A USDA spokesperson said the additional days in the comment period are to ensure everyone who wants to submit feedback can do so. Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle criticized USDA over its rollout of the plan, which calls for relocating much of its Washington-area workforce to five regional hubs across the country. Senate Democrats sent a letter urging Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins to extend the comment period by at least 60 days.

USDA extends reorganization public comment deadline to September 30

The National Pork Board has named David Newman the organization’s new CEO. Newman was recently the NPB’s senior vice president of market growth. “After a thorough and thoughtful nationwide executive search process, we have found an exceptional and dedicated leader in agriculture to take the organization representing America’s nearly 60,000 pork producers into the future,” said Gordon Spronk, President of the NPB. 

“David has proven himself to be leadership-oriented, producer-focused, and outcomes-driven when it comes to ensuring the pork industry is addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.” Newman received a doctorate in meat and animal science from North Dakota State University. “It’s a privilege to work for and on behalf of pork producers,” Newman said. “We make a flavorful, nutritious product that’s beloved by millions of people across the globe.” He also said that the checkoff is doing a lot of work to drive demand from new consumers.

U.S. crop prices were under pressure again Wednesday following a prominent advisory firm unveiling the results of their August yield survey, similar to USDA and others which found corn and soybean yields both above trend. Despite a challenging August for weather in some areas and declining crop conditions in Tuesday's update from USDA, traders are currently seeing very little supply risk as 2025 harvest grows nearer each day. Outside markets on Wednesday were mixed, with equities again on the retreat from last week's highs ahead of what is typically a tough month of September. Meanwhile, energy markets were lower on rumors of another OPEC+ production increase coming in October, which weighed on soybean oil prices which headed to their sixth loss in the past seven sessions.

Live cattle futures moved lower during the session on Wednesday, although compared to the rest of the livestock market, the live cattle complex seemed to be hold the best of all markets. October futures were leading the downward shift in morning losses, but it is important to remember that just because prices are not continuing the aggressive rocket-like shift higher, this does not mean that the market is at or near its top. As of last week, traders continue to maintain a strong net long position in the cattle market in general, and specifically live cattle futures point to continued optimism and positive expectations for price levels in the days and weeks to come. More focus is shifting to the ability to continue to move wholesale and retail beef levels and maintain current or higher price levels now that the summer grilling season is wrapping up. Cash cattle activity has been sluggish once again, with a slow start to the day; bids and asking prices are not established.

Feeder cattle futures lead the market lower midweek, with triple-digit losses seen in all nearby and most deferred contract months. October futures posted the most aggressive pressure with prices over $2 per cwt lower at times during morning trade. The combination of widespread pressure in most ag markets and most commodity markets Wednesday is causing buyer apathy at this point. It is important to remember that a down day in the market does not indicate a lower-moving market in general, as the tone of the market still remains extremely aggressive with prices near all-time highs. Although it is never comfortable to watch, light to moderate corrections within a market are part of a healthy moving market, and many times are needed in order to draw additional buyers to the market over the coming days and weeks. Cash markets remain active with the USDA National feeder cattle summary released Tuesday reporting steers and heifers selling 5.00 to 10.00 higher compared to the previous week.

Lean hog futures were under pressure Wednesday, with outside market softness becoming a larger focus midweek in the hog complex. October futures continued to lead the market lower with triple-digit losses as traders continue to adjust to the current market shifts, with a portion becoming more aggressive in rolling to the December contracts. Even though prices have fluctuated over the past few weeks, and uncertainty about long-term export demand remains a significant concern, prices are still well above the 40-day moving average, which is helping add technical support to the entire complex.

Farmer sentiment dipped for the third straight month in August. The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer dropped 10 points to 125. Producers expressed less optimism about the future, as reflected in the Index of Future Expectations, which fell 16 points to 123. That’s the lowest reading for the futures index since last September. Producers’ perspectives on current conditions changed little during the month, with the Current Conditions Index rising two points from July to 129 in August. 

Sentiment differed greatly among producers according to whether their operations relied mostly on crops or livestock. Crop producers responded to the survey with much less optimism than their livestock counterparts, reflecting the profitability disparity between the two enterprises. Beef cattle operations, in particular, are experiencing record profitability, thanks in part to the smallest cattle inventory since 1951. This stands in sharp contrast to the returns for crop production, which have weakened significantly in 2025. 

Farmer sentiment falls further in August

The U.S. ag trade deficit hit a record high in the first half of this year. Bloomberg said the value of agricultural exports trailed that of imports by $4.1 billion in June, a gap 14 percent wider than a year earlier. USDA data says that pushed the ag sector’s deficit to a staggering $28.6 billion for the first six months of this year. Reports say the trade deficit is one of the main reasons President Trump gave for imposing tariffs and working on new trade deals. 

Former USDA chief economist Joe Glauber said that the trade imbalance shouldn’t be this alarming because of what’s under the surface. He said it’s important to keep in mind that America imports a lot of commodities it can’t produce domestically. The USDA numbers show that Mexico and Canada will remain the top two U.S. ag export markets, followed by the EU, Japan, and China.

Ag markets began the new week, the new month, and new marketing year for corn and soybeans with a lower session, driven primarily by a sharp selloff in soybeans after last week's trade meetings in Washington between Chinese negotiator Li Chenggang and U.S. officials concluded with no deal (although this was always unlikely). There are plans to hold another round of talks prior to the tariff truce extensions cutoff in November. Meanwhile, wheat futures crashed Tuesday as well as world production forecasts for 2025 continue to rise. Outside markets Tuesday saw U.S. equities move firmly lower as September has a tendency to be a bearish month for stocks historically. Energy markets were higher with NYMEX crude oil futures trading among their highest price in just under a month.

Live cattle futures continued to march higher with moderate to active buying redeveloping Tuesday morning when traders returned to the complex following the long weekend and set course for September. October futures moved to new contract highs once again, with prices breaking through the $240 per cwt price threshold, only to give way by the closing bell to finish no better than mixed. The continued support in futures trade remains solid despite a pullback in beef values in the morning report. Traders still remain bullish on cattle long term, as there seems to be very little resistance in both wholesale and retail beef markets, which would significantly curb this market optimism at this point.

Feeder cattle futures continued to lead the livestock and cattle complex higher through the bulk of the session, with triple digits seen in spot September contracts at midday after a strong start of the week and month through the morning activity. Traders continue to focus on not only the current market direction, but the fact that cattle traders remain holding a strong long position in cattle contracts indicates that traders are looking for the bullish run across the cattle industry to continue gains seen through the entire feeder cattle complex. Support waned into the closing bell, with only the deferred contracts finishing in the green. The lack of buyer pressure in the cattle market in general, and specifically the feeder cattle futures, has markets pushing even higher with very little resistance currently seen.

Lean hog futures posted positive market shifts in nearby contracts Tuesday, although the momentum and intensity of active cattle market gains have still limited buyer support across the entire lean hog complex. December contracts continue to lead the hog market higher, as traders continue to bounce back from moderate pressure over the past few weeks. Hog Prices were unreported due to confidentiality on the Daily Direct Morning Hog report.

KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just before 11:30p.m. Saturday, police were dispatched to the 8200 block of Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri. on a shooting call, according to KCPD Captain Jake Becchina.

On arrival officers were directed inside the business there where they located an adult male shooting victim unresponsive on the ground. Officers rendered aid to the victim and summoned EMS to the scene who declared the victim deceased.

Homicide detectives are investigating and canvassing for witnesses. Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim entered the business shortly before the shooting and had an interaction with one or more additional patrons that were also inside the business. That interaction escalated to gunfire and the victim was struck. There is no known suspect information at this time and no one is in custody.

KCPD: One dead in gas station shooting

TOPEKA — In a rare moment of reprieve for U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as he faced&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/09/04/repub/rfk-jr-battles-with-members-of-us-senate-panel-over-vaccines-removal-of-cdc-director/">a grueling group of senators</a>&nbsp;Thursday, U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall of Kansas gave him the opportunity to explain his views on vaccines and leadership.

Democrats and Republicans alike expressed their distaste and concern for Kennedy’s decisions as leader of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during a roughly three-hour hearing before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee. Kennedy defended staff turnover, the erosion of vaccine investment and funding stalls.

But Marshall spent his allotted five minutes leveling with the secretary.

“One of your themes for the CDC is transparency,” Marshall said.

Part of that transparency, he said, is sharing what Kennedy and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention know about vaccines so parents can be better equipped to make decisions. An aide standing behind Marshall held a large sign containing a graphic depicting the current CDC recommendations for vaccinations for children.

“By the time they’re 18 months, they’ve had 18 jabs,” Marshall said. “By the time they get to be old enough to vote, they have 76 jabs.”

An aide moved the sign with the graphic to the side to reveal another sign, which read in bright red type, “76 JABS!”

Marshall, a former OB-GYN who said he’s delivered 5,000 babies, also said he doesn’t understand why newborns are given a hepatitis vaccine if a mother has no risk factors. The hepatitis vaccine is typically the first vaccine a newborn receives.

Hepatitis B is most commonly transmitted from mother to child at birth, and an estimated 1.1 million people died from hepatitis B infections in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.

Marshall said vaccines should be treated like medication and asked how Kennedy uses transparency to do just that.

Kennedy agreed with Marshall, confronting accusations that he is anti-vaccine.

“Saying I’m anti-vaccine is like saying I’m anti-medicine,” Kennedy said. “I’m pro-medicine, but I understand some medicines harm people. Some of them have risks. Some of them have benefits that outweigh those risks for some populations.”

Marshall said he and Kennedy are fighting to empower parents to make their own decisions surrounding vaccines.

“I guess before the press labels me wrong, I’m not anti-vaccine either,” Marshall said, expressing support for the MMR, DPT, polio and smallpox vaccines.

Marshall also gave Kennedy time to clear up any confusion about his stance on the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, which Kennedy oversees, more than 1.2 million deaths have been attributed to COVID-19 as of Aug. 30. In an estimated 87% of those deaths, COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death, and it was listed as a contributing cause in the remaining deaths.

Earlier in the hearing, Kennedy said he didn’t know the total COVID-19 death toll in the U.S., refuting existing estimates of both the death toll and vaccine efficacy rates. He blamed “data chaos” at the CDC, which he also oversees.

Marshall agreed with Kennedy, articulating the difference between the number of people dying from COVID and the number of those who died with COVID.

“The calculus is different and it’s complicated,” Kennedy said, “and, you know, if you want to just turn everything into a sound bite, it makes it — you can’t have a grown-up conversation.”

RFK Jr., Kan. U.S. senator find common ground on vaccines at contentious hearing

JOHNSON COUNTY —A Kansas police K9 returned to work last week after being stabbed while assisting during an arrest last month.

 After a full recovery and medical clearance, K9 Dagger returned to full duty, according to a social media report from the Shawnee Police Department.&nbsp;

Just before 4a.m. August 5, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department was dispatched to disturbance at a home in the 900 block of Riverview, according to a media release.

At the home, officers spoke with the caller who said a family member had returned to the. home after an earlier assault involving a knife. When officers approached the home to talk to the man, he barricaded himself inside.

The Shawnee Police Department assisted and brought K9 Dagger, a Belgian Malinois, to the scene. When officers went inside the home to take make an arrest, the suspect stabbed the K9 officer.

Dagger was transported to a local veterinarian and was expected to make a full recovery. Dagger has been with the Shawnee Police Department since 2023.

At 7:30 a.m., the suspect surrendered and was arrested.&nbsp;

In 2024 the Kansas legislature passed&nbsp; “Bane’s Law,” that increases penalties for inflicting harm on law enforcement animals, including horses. The felony crime is now punishable by a minimum of 90 days in jail and a minimum fine of $10,000.

Governor Kelly vetoed the bill but on was overridden 105-20 in the House and 29-10 in the Senate.

Kansas police K-9 returns to full time duty after being stabbed

HUTCHINSON —The Cottonwood Building at the Kansas State Fair was evacuated due to a gas leak on Saturday, according to a media release from the Kansas Fire Marshal's office.&nbsp; 

Staff from the Fire Marshal's office responded to a report of a smell of gas in the building and detected a dangerous buildup of gas in the building, which contains a food court.

The Hutchinson Fire Department was at the scene and pushed fresh air into the building to dissipate the gas. They were working to determine the source of the gas and that it was safe to reopen the building.

"Great teamwork by all of our public safety partners working to keep our state fairgrounds safe!&nbsp; "

Gas leak forces evacuation at Kansas State Fair food court

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of an apartment fire and a later a house fire in Kansas City, Missouri.

Just after 6:30p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported apartment fire in the area of 18th Street and Brooklyn Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Riley Nolan.&nbsp;

 On arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke from a two-story structure off of 18th Street and Euclid.  An offensive fire attack was ordered, and interior operations were initiated using multiple handlines. Two separate apartments were involved in the fire, which was brought "under control" by companies on scene at 7:02 p.m. Searches of the structure came back all clear. There were no injuries reported.

Just before 8p.m. Saturday, crews&nbsp;responded to a reported fire in the 5900 block of Bellefontaine Avenue, according to Nolan.

Crews reported smoke and fire showing from a 1-story home on arrival. Offensive operations were ordered, and two handlines were advanced into the structure to extinguish the fire. 

&nbsp;The fire was brought under control at 8:09 p.m. Companies on scene continued with salvage and overhaul operations while extinguishing hot spots. There were no injuries reported.

Cause of a KC apartment fire and a house fire under investigation 

Two tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, matched all six numbers in Saturdayk night’s Powerball® drawing and will split a $1.787 billion jackpot, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The winning numbers in the Saturday, Sept. 6 Powerball drawing were white balls 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and red Powerball 17. The Power Play® multiplier was 2.

With final ticket sales, the Powerball jackpot came in at $1.787 billion – making it the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever won, trailing only the world-record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won in California on Nov. 7, 2022.

“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winners and the Missouri Lottery and Texas Lottery for selling the winning tickets,” said Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. “Each $2 ticket sold during this Powerball jackpot run gave players a chance at the prize, while also supporting vital public programs and services in their communities — and that’s worth celebrating!”

Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million. Both prize options are before taxes. If a winner selects the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5-percent each year.

U.S. lotteries are reminding players to check their tickets carefully, as cash prizes are also awarded for matching the red Powerball or other numbers in the winning combination.

More than 9.9 million tickets won cash prizes in last night’s Powerball drawing.

Nationwide, 18 tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million prizes. The $1 million-winning tickets were sold in California (2), Colorado, Florida, Illinois (2), Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York (2), Ohio (2), Oregon, Texas (2) and West Virginia. Note: In California, prize payout amounts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners.

Two tickets matched all five white balls and increased their winnings to $2 million each, by including the Power Play® option for $1 more at purchase. The $2 million-winning tickets were sold in Kansas and Texas.

There were also 232 tickets that won $50,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB) and 90 tickets that won $100,000 prizes (Match 4 + PB + Power Play).

In the Double Play® drawing, two tickets in Florida and Maine won $500,000 each after matching all five black balls.
