A Republican judge in Cole County on Thursday ruled that the ballot summary must be rewritten for a proposed constitutional amendment that would make it much harder for Missourians to amend the constitution through citizen initiative petitions.

Cole County Circuit Judge Daniel Green ordered the first three bullet points of the summary voters will see on the ballot to be removed, saying they were misleading because they tout provisions already in state law — such as a ban on foreign campaign contributions and penalties for signature fraud.&nbsp;

It isn’t until the fourth bullet point that voters learn the proposal’s main purpose, which is to require constitutional amendments put on the ballot by voters to obtain both a simple majority statewide and a majority in all eight congressional districts to pass. Currently, constitutional amendments only require a simple majority statewide.&nbsp;

Scott Charton, spokesman for Missourians for Fair Governance, the political arm of the organization that filed the lawsuit, the Missouri Association of Realtors, called the quick decision by Green to remove misleading “ballot candy” a total victory.

“We are grateful the court agreed with our arguments and is stripping the misleading, unfair and prejudicial ballot candy from this bad measure,” Charton said. “Missourians deserve clarity in what they are voting on, especially when they are being asked by lawmakers to give up their citizen initiative power, a constitutional right they reserved for themselves more than a century ago.”

Passed by lawmakers during a special session last fall convened to enact a gerrymandered congressional map, the proposed amendment would allow a small percentage of the state’s voters to defeat any citizen initiative petition.&nbsp;

During the 2024 general election, 311,915 votes were cast in the 1st District out of the state’s 2,960,266 votes. So 156,000 voters — or about 5.3% of the statewide vote — could prevent a measure from passing.

Only citizen-led initiative petitions would be affected. Amendments placed on the ballot by state lawmakers are not included in the change.&nbsp;

Missouri is one of 24 states that allows citizen initiative petitions. They can be used to either amend the constitution or change state law, though the path to successfully doing so is often arduous and expensive, requiring tens of thousands of signatures to even land on the ballot.&nbsp;

Through recent ballot measures, Missourians have legalized abortion and recreational use of marijuana and voted to increase the minimum wage and mandate paid-sick leave.&nbsp;

In 2024, the abortion-rights amendment passed with just shy of 52% of the vote with large support from the state’s urban, more-populated areas. Voters in all but eight of Missouri’s 115 counties opposed the amendment.

Judge strips ‘ballot candy’ from plan to make it harder to amend Missouri Constitution 

GRUNDY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just afater 8a.m. Friday in Grundy County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Nissan Rogue driven by an 80-year-old Harris woman was southbound on MO 146 approaching MO 6 two miles west of Trenton. The driver failed to stop at at the stop sign at the intersection. The Nissan struck the passenger side of a westbound 2013 Chrysler Town and Country driven by a 78-year-old Trenton man.

A private vehicle transported the van driver to Wright Memorial Hospital. The Nissan driver was not wearing a seat belt and not injured, according to the MSHP. The Patrol no longer releases names of accident victims.

The Saint Joseph Symphony has announced its upcoming Women’s March concert, scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 7:00 p.m. 

The performance, hosted at the historic Missouri Theater, aims to celebrate the artistic achievements and creative voices of women in classical music. The program is designed to honor both the trailblazing composers of the past and the dynamic leaders shaping the industry today.

The repertoire features a diverse selection of orchestral works, including pieces by historic figures Louise Farrenc and Marianna Martines, as well as contemporary composers Florence Price and Jessie Montgomery. Sponsored by Dr. Helyn Strickland, the event highlights a legacy of resilience and brilliance. Executive Director Nancy Brunson emphasized the historical weight of the evening, noting that women’s voices were largely ignored in the concert hall until the last several decades.

“We are proud to present a program during Women’s History Month that uplifts lesser-known extraordinary composers and reflects our ongoing commitment to musical awareness, education, and artistic excellence,” Brunson said. She further noted that these specific works have never been performed on the Missouri Theater stage, making the event a significant milestone for the local arts community.

Beyond the music, the Symphony is using the month of March to recognize local women-owned businesses and community leaders. Through social media promotional partnerships and features on the history of St. Joseph, the organization seeks to empower women both on and off the stage. The Symphony also plans to highlight its own talented female principal musicians throughout the month to showcase the leadership currently present within the ensemble.

The evening is intended to be an immersive experience, beginning with a pre-concert wine reception when doors open at 6:00 p.m. Brunson expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming gathering, stating, “The Women’s March concert is both a musical celebration and a meaningful statement.” She added that the organization is particularly hoping the women of St. Joseph will join in what she describes as an unforgettable celebration of music and leadership.

Former St. Joseph Mayor Bill Falkner is looking to return and represent Buchanan County once his time in the Missouri House is complete, announcing his candidacy for Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner in the August election.&nbsp;

Falkner, who is completing his final term in the Missouri House, said he is ready to bring his experience in public service and problem solving back home to focus on the needs of the community.

“As my time in the Missouri Capitol comes to an end, my commitment to the people of Buchanan County remains as strong as ever,” Falkner said in a news release. “Our county deserves leadership that understands our challenges firsthand and is prepared to get to work on day one.”

Falkner says he looks forward to spending more time in St. Joseph addressing local needs and less time navigating Jefferson City’s politically-charged environment.&nbsp;&nbsp;His campaign will focus on restoring and strengthening local infrastructure, ensuring roads, bridges, and public facilities are safe, reliable, and built for future growth. He also plans to champion family-owned businesses and farms, emphasizing their importance to the county’s economic stability and long-term success.

“I’m running to make sure Buchanan County continues to be a place where families can thrive. My work in the House may be coming to an end, but there is still much I want to do to help keep Buchanan County on the path to success and defended against government overreach.”

Missouri Western State University’s Career Development Center will host an All Majors Career Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Fulkerson Center. 

The event offers students a platform to connect with potential employers and prepare for professional life.

Attendees will have the opportunity to interview for positions on-site. To support their professional presentation, students can access the Career Closet for free business attire and have professional headshots taken during the event.

The fair will feature more than 60 registered employers. Early arrival is encouraged, as the first 50 attendees will receive a prize. Additionally, the center will hold gift card raffles every 30 minutes throughout the event.

A Missouri Western State University instructor will host a free writing workshop, “Stories as Letters,” at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Rolling Hills Library Upper Story, located at 1912 N. Belt Highway.

Justin Eells, a developmental writing instructor at the university, will lead the session. The workshop invites participants to explore epistolary fiction and nonfiction—a genre where stories are told through documents such as letters. Eells said the session is designed to help writers develop unique character voices and create the sense of intimacy that letter-writing provides.

The event is open to the public and accommodates all experience levels, ranging from seasoned authors to beginners.

Eells joined the Missouri Western faculty in 2023. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and a certificate in the teaching of writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Free writing workshop, ‘Stories as Letters,’ on Feb. 21 at Rolling Hills Library

Students from the St. Joseph schools, known as the Student Voice Alliance, met with city officials this month to discuss their ideas to help improve the city.  

The group of students were narrowed down from a larger group that met at Empower U in downtown St. Joseph last month, developing ideas to help with homelessness and overall cleanliness of the city.  

St. Joseph City Manager Mike Schumacher says the group came to city officials also with ideas of how to better communicate with people their age, an idea that includes going to Tik Tok 

“Because that’s what that age bracket, that’s the current social media platform of choice, and there’s a lot to that and those students are going to help us come up with a communication strategy,” Schumacher says on the KFEQmunnity show.  “Because how you communicate to somebody my age versus how you communicate to somebody whose let’s say 16. Is completely different, and one is not better that the other it’s just different, so they’re going to teach us how to communicate to that age bracket.” 

Schumacher says the topics that students want to discuss, perhaps unironically, mirror the city survey results 

"It’s driving our entire organization at this point, so I’m fairly comfortable that 16 year olds didn’t really fill out those surveys, and if they did it would have been very few of them, but their concerns mirror, for the most part, mirror the citizen satisfaction survey,” Schumacher explains.  “So, it’s kind of a confirmation of the survey that we’re on the right track and it also highlighted a lot of opportunities.” 

Schumacher says after discussion with the group, they will even continue to meet with city officials throughout the summer to work on these ideas.  

“We would have bet $1 that they would not be interested over the summer, but the group without hesitation said we want to do it through the summer, we want to keep this conversation going so we will be here,” Schumacher says.  “That made me incredibly proud of that group and if you take a step back and you look at that, that shows the dedication.” 

Schumacher says the dedication adds to his excitement for the program, as well as the missions of the students aligning with the current existing mission for the city.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Greater St. Joseph, and the St. Joseph Community Alliance are inviting residents to help shape the future of the city on Feb. 24.

The morning-long event, held at inspireU, 521 Felix St., is dedicated to the "Imagine St. Joseph 2040" initiative, focusing on community vision, expert insight, and local voices.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The morning kicks off with a keynote breakfast featuring Rebecca Ryan, a renowned futurist who assisted in developing the original 2040 plan. She will return to share her expertise on emerging trends and the specific opportunities that lie ahead for communities like St. Joseph. This session is open to the public; however, registration is required to cover the $25 cost of the meal.

Following the breakfast, the focus shifts to hands-on collaboration during the 2040 Workshop. This interactive session is designed to evaluate the progress of the current plan and gather fresh input to update the city's roadmap. This portion of the event is free and open to the public, providing a platform for everyone to contribute to the community’s long-term direction.

Community leaders to host 'Imagine St. Joseph 2040' event at inspireU

The Missouri Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to Hoy Excavating, LLC for an intersection improvement project on U.S. Route 169 at Riverside Terrace, located south of St. Joseph. 

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, March 2.

The project aims to improve sight distance and safety by shifting the U.S. Route 169 roadway slightly north between Summerhill Drive and Southeast Riverside Terrace. Additionally, crews will realign both the north and south entrances of Southeast Riverside Terrace at the Route 169 intersection.

To accommodate the construction, Route 169 will be closed to all traffic between Route AC and Southeast 70th Street.

The Missouri House approved a&nbsp;<a href="https://house.mo.gov/Bill.aspx?bill=HB2641&amp;year=2026&amp;code=R" target="_blank">bill</a>&nbsp;Thursday that would ban all intoxicating hemp products — things like THC seltzers or hemp-derived THC edibles currently sold at gas stations and smoke shops — beginning in November.

The bill, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Dave Hinman of O’Fallon, would prohibit hemp products from containing more than 0.4 milligrams of THC per container, which is among the<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/12/23/new-federal-regulations-complicate-missouri-debate-over-intoxicating-hemp/">&nbsp;limits</a>&nbsp;included in a provision in the federal spending bill Congress approved last year.

Even if Congress reverses course and decides to allow the sale of these products, Hinman’s bill would only permit them to be sold in Missouri’s licensed marijuana dispensaries. And if Congress chooses to delay the ban for a couple years, Missouri would still ban all products, except for intoxicating beverages.&nbsp;

With a 109-34 vote, the bill now heads to the Senate for its consideration.&nbsp;

“We’re not pioneering anything new here,” Hinman said during debate on his bill Thursday. “What Missouri is doing…is simply aligning our state statutes with the federal action so our law enforcement, the highway patrol, local prosecutors and the attorney general’s office can work in tandem with our federal partners. No gaps, no loopholes.”

Republican State Rep. Matthew Overcast of Ava spoke against the bill, particularly a provision stating intoxicating hemp products “shall be considered marijuana” and be regulated the same.&nbsp;

This would essentially ban nearly all intoxicating hemp products currently sold in the state because marijuana must be grown in Missouri and most hemp is grown elsewhere. It would also require hemp products to be sold in licensed cannabis dispensaries, which can only sell product grown within Missouri licensed cultivation facilities.&nbsp;

Overcast argued that Missouri’s constitution already defines what marijuana is, and only voters can change that definition — not lawmakers. And while proponents say the changes are needed to protect children from accessing these products, Overcast said, the reality is the bill will only protect the marijuana industry from competition.&nbsp;

“We cannot rewrite voter adopted language by statute simply because certain market participants prefer less competition,” Overcast said. “If protecting children was truly the goal, we know what works: age restrictions, standards, clear labeling, packaging safeguards, responsible retail rules.”

Hinman said he believes Missouri lawmakers have the authority to make this change.&nbsp;

“The [Missouri] Constitution defines marijuana broadly as anything from the cannabis plant except for industrial hemp,” Hinman said. “Hemp-derived cannabinoid products are not industrial hemp. They are intoxicating.”

Overcast also argued the bill doesn’t allow Missouri to continue to align with federal guidelines. If Congress passed legislation allowing states to sell intoxicating hemp products outside of marijuana dispensaries, Overcast said Missouri businesses would not be able to because Hinman’s bill only allows them to be sold within what he called the “marijuana monopoly.”

“That is not public safety, that is not safety policy,” he said. “This is picking winners and losers.”&nbsp;

State officials&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/10/03/cost-to-enforce-ban-on-intoxicating-hemp-products-in-missouri-estimated-at-nearly-900k/">estimated&nbsp;</a>in 2024 that 40,000 food establishments and smoke shops and 1,800 food manufacturers were selling products that would be banned under the proposed federal regulations. It includes low-dose THC seltzers, such as Mighty Kind and Triple, that have&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/10/27/thc-beverage-boom-faces-missouri-crackdown-amid-regulatory-concerns-safety-risks/">increased in popularity</a>&nbsp;at liquor stores and bars.&nbsp;

Hinman’s legislation is one of the first bills to get House approval this year. He previously told The Independent the legislation was a priority for the state’s leadership, including the governor, attorney general and House speaker.

This will be the fourth year in a row that Missouri lawmakers have attempted to regulate intoxicating hemp products, with&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/04/10/intoxicating-hemp-regulations-stall-in-missouri-senate-after-7-hour-filibuster/">previous debates ending in stalemates</a>.&nbsp;

Hinman told The Independent Thursday afternoon that he considers himself to be “pro small business,” and this wasn’t the bill he was hoping to pass this year – but it aligns the state with the upcoming federal restrictions.&nbsp;

“All of last year and up until before this federal decision was made, I was pushing to keep drinks and low-dose gummies available for those small businesses to sell,” he said.&nbsp;

For 10 months last year, he said he tried to bring hemp business owners together to&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2025/03/14/lawmakers-vote-down-a-second-bill-to-regulate-intoxicating-hemp-products-in-missouri/">propose a regulatory framework</a>&nbsp;outside of the marijuana rules.&nbsp;

“And they could not come to a conclusion on what would be acceptable,” Hinman said.&nbsp;

Restricting the products to only be sold in cannabis dispensaries was also not his preference, he said, but it’s the regulatory framework the state already has in place.&nbsp;

His original language stated Missouri would delay its ban if the federal government did, but he said that would unintentionally leave the products unregulated in the state indefinitely.&nbsp;

“And then we’re back to trying to create a regulatory framework for hemp products,” he said. “The attorney general was not happy because she wants something accomplished. And of course, the police do…their hands are tied with continuing with an unregulated market.”

If Congress decided to allow low-dose THC hemp products to be sold outside dispensaries, he said Missouri would have to come back and pass legislation allowing that.

Republican state Rep. Jeff Myers of Warrenton&nbsp;spoke in favor of closing loopholes that were opened when Congress legalized hemp in the 2018 Farm Bill.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“All we’re saying is the federal government went back and addressed a loophole that got exploited,” he said. “We’re closing that back up.”

Missouri House passes legislation banning intoxicating hemp products

St. Joseph Memorial Park Cemetery is scheduled for a semi-annual grounds cleanup on Monday, March 2. 

Starting at daybreak, cemetery staff will begin removing all flowers, decorations, and personal items from every grave. This site-wide clearing is a necessary step to allow teams to begin seasonal mowing and essential maintenance of the cemetery grounds.

There are no exceptions to this policy. Community members are asked to retrieve any items they wish to keep by the evening of Sunday, March 1. Any items remaining on the gravesites at daybreak on Monday will be subject to disposal.

Given the unseasonably mild weather, families are encouraged to visit the park and remove their personal items ahead of the deadline to avoid the last-minute rush.

As a reminder, Memorial Park Cemetery conducts two general cleanups each year to keep the grounds in order:

The SAVE America Act to require proof of citizenship nationwide to register to vote will be voted on soon by the United States Senate after earning approval from the House.  

The proposal would require citizens to present documents such as a passport or birth certificate to register to vote or update their registration. 

US Senator Roger Marshall says he and his fellow Republicans believe its reasonable to ask citizens to show an ID when coming to vote or register 

“We think that’s the way the founding fathers meant it to be, unfortunately no Democrats are going to support that,” Marshall tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post.  “So, it will take 60 votes to get it through on the Senate, and we don’t have 60 votes, if every Republican voted for it we still would be seven short.” 

Marshall says what is interesting to him however is the issue is an 80-20 issue 

"That 80% of Americans, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, would like election integrity, they think it’s a very reasonable for people to show an ID when they go vote,” Marshall explains.  “You know I can’t get a hotel room, I can’t rent a car, I can’t get on an airplane without an ID, I think the value, how important I value voting is every bit as important, probably more important, than those and that would be a reasonable request, but I’m just afraid we don’t have the votes to get it through in the Senate because no Democrat is going to vote for it.” 

Many stand against the measure, claiming it would cause a suppression of voters, requiring documents such as a passport or birth certificate to register to vote or update their registration.  It also would require a photo ID to vote.  

To those claims, Marshall says people should value the ability to vote 

“These same people that we’re talking about have an ID so that they can, like I said, go get a hotel room, rent a car, or get on an airplane, so that’s a reasonable expectation, I think it’s a reasonable expectation to do this as well,” Marshall says.  “I think that we should value elections even more, and again 80% of Americans agree with me.” 

Republicans control 53 seats of the Senate, however some have not signed onto the measure.

As SAVE America Act hits Senate floor, US Senator Marshall calls expectations reasonable

Legislation creating a state-run video lottery system to replace and regulate “gray market” slot machines that have proliferated for years in gas stations, bars and fraternal halls across the state narrowly cleared the Missouri House Wednesday, winning passage by just one vote.&nbsp;

The bill, which now heads to the Missouri Senate for consideration, is the culmination of years of efforts by lawmakers to rein in the burgeoning industry that has operated in a legal gray area of state law.&nbsp;

Under the legislation, the Missouri Lottery would have authority to license video games for installation in retail locations across the state. The licensed machines would have to pay out at least 80% of the money wagered as prizes and about one-third of the profits would be dedicated to state education programs.

The bill would also impose a 3% tax on video lottery profits to aid local governments and would increase the fee casinos pay for each patron who enters the gaming floor from $2 to $4. On Monday, the House adopted several amendments to the bill, including one adding an&nbsp;<a href="https://documents.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills261/amendpdf/6459H03.18H.pdf" target="_blank">annual $250 fee per machine</a>&nbsp;to go towards disability services.&nbsp;

Companies profiting from unregulated convenience store slot machines would have one year to pull their games off the market.&nbsp;

“I think this is the right thing to do for our state,” said state Rep. Bill Hardwick, a Republican from Dixon sponsoring the legislation.

Supporters pitched the bill as a trade: tighter rules, centralized oversight and tax revenue in exchange for a phased removal of the unregulated machines. And the bill gives local governments the authority to ban the games from their communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Opponents warned it would legitimize companies that have profited in the shadows and further expand gambling into everyday retail spaces — even as courts and law enforcement have moved to declare many of the existing games illegal outside casinos.

“Why are we changing our laws to help an industry that thumbed their nose at the State of Missouri?” said state Rep. Dean Van Schoiack, a Republican from Savannah.

But even those who don’t agree with the expansion of gambling in the state said Wednesday that the legislation is likely needed.&nbsp;

“I hate these machines with a passion. I don’t like what they do to our communities,” said state Rep. Darin Chappell, a Republican from Rogersville, adding: “But I don’t want them to continue to be gray, which is a misnomer. They’re illegal. But most prosecutors have been unable or unwilling to prosecute the illegal machines.”

If these games are going to exist, Chappel said, they should be regulated and taxed.&nbsp;

Last week, in a civil lawsuit, a federal judge declared slot machines operated by Wildwood-based Torch Electronics are illegal gambling devices under state law. And Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed lawsuits against retail shops in Dunklin County alleging the businesses were operating illegal gambling machines on their premises.

Hardwick said his bill would enhance the attorney general’s efforts to go after illegal gambling by clarifying Missouri law and giving Hanaway’s office criminal jurisdiction to go after violators.&nbsp;

The bill’s chances in the Senate remain unclear. On Tuesday, Senate President Pro Tem Cindy O’Laughlin, a Shelbina Republican, questioned the need for the legislation.

“The federal courts have issued a decision that the machines are illegal,” she wrote. “Why are we not just clearing them out?”

The licensed machines would have to pay out at least 80% of the money wagered as prizes and about one-third of the profits would be dedicated to state education programs.The bill would also impose a 3% tax on video lottery profits to aid local governments and would increase the fee casinos pay for each patron who enters the gaming floor from $2 to $4. I don’t like what they do to our communities,” said state Rep. Darin Chappell, a Republican from Rogersville, adding: “But I don’t want them to continue to be gray, which is a misnomer. They’re illegal. But most prosecutors have been unable or unwilling to prosecute the illegal machines.”If these games are going to exist, Chappel said, they should be regulated and taxed.&nbsp;Last week, in a civil lawsuit, a federal judge declared slot machines operated by Wildwood-based Torch Electronics are illegal gambling devices under state law. And Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed lawsuits against retail shops in Dunklin County alleging the businesses were operating illegal gambling machines on their premises.Hardwick said his bill would enhance the attorney general’s efforts to go after illegal gambling by clarifying Missouri law and giving Hanaway’s office criminal jurisdiction to go after violators.&nbsp;The bill’s chances in the Senate remain unclear. On Tuesday, Senate President Pro Tem Cindy O’Laughlin, a Shelbina Republican, questioned the need for the legislation.“The federal courts have issued a decision that the machines are illegal,” she wrote. “Why are we not just clearing them out?”

Missouri House narrowly passes bill to regulate gray-market slot machines

The St. Joseph Police Department and the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office have announced an upcoming eight-week academy running from March 31st through May 26th.

This program is designed to be both informative and engaging, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the day-to-day operations within local law enforcement agencies.

Classes will be held every Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm to approximately 9:00 pm at the Law Enforcement Center, located at 501 Faraon, unless otherwise specified. Each session will be led by certified Law Enforcement Officers from both the City and County departments, offering a look at how teams serve the community.

Buchanan Sheriff Bill Puett says class members will be able to tour the jail as part of the academy. "Typically no on gets to tour the jail. We lock everything down so people can walk though."

It was noted that this is not a candidate school for aspiring officers. Instead, it is a community outreach program intended to provide a hands-on experience of departmental operations. Active discussion and mutual learning is encouraged, but this program is not a forum for debating personal grievances or previous enforcement contacts.

St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster says, "This is really a flagship program for our community engagement efforts. Everyone I've talked to who has been through the academy couldn't say enough good things about it."

Due to the interactive nature of the academy, class size is limited to 30 participants. Law enforcement is requesting that only those who can commit to the full eight-week schedule apply. To graduate, participants must attend at least six of the nine scheduled sessions.

Reasons for not being accepted may include (but are not limited to); Any felony arrest or conviction, any misdemeanor arrest or conviction within the last year, and arrests related to drugs, domestic violence, or other violent acts.

Only the first thirty qualified candidates will be selected.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be honored at a graduation ceremony and presented with a diploma by Chief of Police Paul Luster and Sheriff Bill Puett.

Joint Citizens Law Enforcement Academy begins next month in St. Joseph

Northwest Missouri State University continues to see steady enrollment numbers this spring, bolstered by a significant rise in undergraduate students and strong retention figures, according to recently released census data.

The university’s total spring enrollment reached 7,674 students. This figure includes 4,315 undergraduates, marking a 4% increase in that demographic compared to the previous year. While spring totals are traditionally lower than fall numbers, Northwest has consistently surpassed the 7,000-student threshold since 2022, following a record high of 8,817 students in 2024.

Student retention remains a high point for the institution, with a fall-to-spring retention rate of 88%. The university also reported a 94% persistence rate, which tracks students who either remain enrolled or have successfully completed their degree programs.

“The entire Northwest campus community is focused on recruiting, enrolling, retaining and graduating students,” said Dr. Allison Hoffmann, associate provost of enrollment management and student success. Hoffmann noted that the university is particularly pleased with the undergraduate growth and the marginal increases in retention and persistence.

The university’s geographic footprint remains largely regional, with 5,183 students originating from Missouri. However, the student body includes domestic representatives from 49 states—with strong draws from Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas—and international students from 46 different countries.

International students account for 3% of the total population. The university reported that the majority of its international enrollment comes from India, France, and Nepal.

Spring enrollment at Northwest crosses 7,000 mark for fifth consecutive year

The Western Farm Show will take place in Kansas City this week at the American Royal Complex.

This is the 64th annual Western Farm Show, which is the Midwest’s largest indoor agricultural event. The show features over 400 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in farm equipment, technology, and a wide array of agricultural products and services across more than 400,000 square feet of exhibit space.&nbsp;

Western Farm Show in KC begins Thursday

Officials with Buchanan County hope to break ground soon on an expansion to&nbsp;the&nbsp; Juvenile&nbsp;Justice&nbsp;Academy&nbsp;adding more space to the facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Currently, the facility houses just six beds.&nbsp;&nbsp;The expansion will add 18 more, upping capacity to 24.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Buchanan County Presiding Commissioner Scott Nelson says the upgrade is big in helping keep the community&nbsp;safe, and&nbsp;helps save resources for law enforcement who previously may have&nbsp;no had a&nbsp;place to put youth taken off the street.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“You’re wasting a lot of resources, a lot of police deputies and things like that, picking up people and knowing that they’re not going anywhere,&nbsp;they’re just going to go in, process, they’re going to be out, because there’s no space, and guess what&nbsp;they’re going to do, you think they’re going to stop? No,” Nelson says on the&nbsp;KFEQmunnity&nbsp;show. &nbsp;“They’ve&nbsp;got it figured it, which is sad too, so the idea of being able to house them now and get them off the street is big.”&nbsp;

Nelson says the project has been talked about for some time now, starting to hear about it himself his second year in his seat&nbsp;

"So&nbsp;then you start saying are we just going to talk about this or can we facilitate a project? &nbsp;And I can only speak for the county, we don’t like taxes, we don’t like to&nbsp;produce a new tax or promote a new tax, we want to be able to, I call it, be able to do it in house, and sometimes we have to stretch that out a little bit,” Nelson explains. &nbsp;“But, instead of just talking about it,&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;like ok do&nbsp;we want to do it and we decided we did, and that got the ball rolling.”&nbsp;

Nelson says the once the construction begins it will happen in two phases&nbsp;

“They're going to build the new stuff, which is the 24 beds, get that ready to go and then there’s going to be a transfer time of the people and the workers and administration&nbsp;stuff like that,&nbsp;they’ll&nbsp;move those people into the new facility,” Nelson says. &nbsp;“And then they’ll start reworking a little bit of the space in the old facility to match up in that regard.”&nbsp;

The project is set to take around&nbsp;18 months&nbsp;to complete, being finished around late 2027, if construction begins around that May&nbsp;timeframe.&nbsp;

Officials hopeful expansion of Buchanan County  Juvenile Justice Academy can begin in May

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Dive Team recovered a body and a vehicle from Smithville Lake on Tuesday. 

The recovery operation was conducted in coordination with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, which had requested the dive team’s specialized assistance at the scene.

According to the MSHP, the recovery was tied to an ongoing investigation currently being led by the sheriff’s office. Officials have not yet disclosed the specific nature of that investigation or how the vehicle was first identified beneath the water’s surface.

As of Tuesday evening, the Platte County Sheriff’s Office has not identified the deceased individual. The investigation remains active, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
