Authorities said the assault occurred in the dining hall Monday. Prison officials said an inmate punched a staff member in the face multiple times. The staff member fell to the ground, at which time the inmate kicked the staff member in the face, according to prison officials. When additional staff arrived to intervene, the inmate ran away from the area and was quickly restrained.
The staff member was hospitalized for serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
The Nebraska State Patrol will investigate and refer their results to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services will also apply sanctions under its disciplinary process. The inmate has been removed from the general population and placed in restrictive housing.
“NDCS staff members are brave, dedicated professionals who knowingly put themselves in harm’s way. Prison is a dangerous place, but violence to our staff members will not be tolerated,”said Director Scott R. Frakes.. “The facility is managing the level of threat with appropriately controlled movement.”
This marks the second assault of staff members at the southeastern Nebraska prison in just over a week. Since 2015, TSCI has seen riots, fires, and other violent incidents claimed the lives of four inmates and caused millions of dollars in damage.
