city of st joseph sealThere will be a primary election in St Joseph this February for the at-large seats on the City Council as well as in Council District Five.

City Clerk Paul Heyde says there were eight candidates who turned in sufficient petitions for the three at-large seats on the council. A total of six candidates will advance to the general election.

Two incumbent council members and a sitting municipal judge will run unopposed.

Mayor Bill Falkner will face Ben Burtnett in the general election.

The candidates for the at-large seats will be Byron Myers, Donna Jean Boyer, Robert Hart, Jeff Penland, Ken Beck, Kent O’Dell, Dennis Weisenburger, and Gary S Wilkinson. Ms Heyde says there is one more petition that they have yet to certify in the at-large race.

In District Five, Michael Grimm, Mary Atteberry and Barbara LaBass have all successfully petitioned onto the ballot, and they’ll face off in the primary. Only the top two vote getters will advance to the general election in April.

In the other district races, a primary will not be needed. District Three Council Member P.J. Kovac and District Four Council Member Gary Roach will run unopposed. In District One, Pat Jones will face Dennis Adams in the general election. The District Two Council race will pit Joyce Star against Ellis Cross.

Municipal Judge John Boeh was the only candidate to file for that office.
