Charges of statutory rape and statutory sodomy have been filed against a 32-year-old St Joseph man for allegedly victimizing a girl under the age of 16.

St Joseph police say John Howery gave marijuana and alcohol to the girl, and other minors.

A judge ruled that Howery poses a continuing danger to the victim and the community, and ordered him held without bond.

Police also argue in court documents that Howery has a past history for failing to appear in court, tampering, alcohol, interfering with arrest and stealing.

A hearing is scheduled next week to allow Howery to post bond.  Meanwhile, a preliminary hearing is scheduled March 15.

They all should have to live in a single man cell and only be able to come out when its time for MMA practice. No need to spend your hard earned money on punching bags anymore. Daily ass beatins. With that said he will have his time in court. I know nothing about this case and he may or may not be guilty. (just my opinion)

Just thinking a grown man of 32 years old hanging out with 16 year olds buying alcohol and marijuana is pathetic and the warning bells should of went off in the parents minds. Look out legal ladies this guy obvious can’t get a woman with out getting them stoned and drunk. GHB is the next level for a creep like this.

The parents are in the same place that alot of parents are nowadays…..can’t be bothered. A child needs attention. Alot of people set their kids in from of the tv, xbox, or what ever will entertain them so the parent can do their own thing. It is the way of the world now. Believe me, we are raising a bunch of kids with little remorse, caring, or feelings for the feelings of others.
I don’t know what this childs particulars are but she couldn’t have been very well looked after. sad………

The parents of this girl are NOT to blame. They are great people and should not be judged. If you only knew the details of this situation you would feel horrible for your comments. He is the only one who should be judged. The parents are victims of his crimes as well as the child

No one is blaming the parents. Not directly. I know we cant keep an eye on children 24/7. But there is something missing. All kids will experiment. But how many times did this happen? Was it one time? Did he get her drunk and high a couple times before the rape and sodomy occured?
Time will tell. You’re right, he should be judged harshly.

I have known him for a long time, he was in the military and doesn’t do drugs. I have seen him on the news for the Red Cross and the Rotary Club… it doesn’t make sense. I think there may be more to this than is being put out there. Keep in mind the media can pretty much say what they want, I hope for the family’s sake this gets resolved.

I think judging isn’t going to solve anything here anyways. It’s a sick world, but sitting here commenting on something that 9/10 people know nothing about, other than what they read in the newspaper, isn’t going to help anything. I would say keep your nose in your own business and so will everyone else.

  • Ridiculous

It seems that all you need to get away with a crime in St. Joe is to know someone higher up in the police dept. He got bonded when it was reported he was without bond. Next, he’ll be exonerated with no reason given. After all, people have gotten away with worse in this town. I know him, but if he is guilty then he should be put away for a very long time. His brothers position should not matter. If he gets away without a trial then his brother should lose his job as a detective!

So why would they give him a bail? Either there isn’t enough evidence that a crime was committed, the prosecution tried to taint the jury pool to better their chances a making a deal (dont think it doesnt happen) or he has some kind of connection, which is the most plausible? Also the bail was only set at 30000 BAIL NOT BOND, there is a difference (Bail you get back bond you don’t) which does say something… usually its at least 50 or none at all and it is very rare to see bail. All I know is he is a hell of a guy and I am sorry to see him on this side of the law. Hopefully they get this mess sorted out my prayers go out to the family.

      • Ridiculous

I am not sure what is going on. I think he deserves a fair trial, but the original judge had nothing nice to say and felt he should be held without bond. I find it very strange that he was released to his parents on bail. I hope justice is served and the truth is told either way, innocent or guilty.

I know John’s family personally since I was a kid. His mom even babysat me at times. He is a few years younger than I. Get your facts straight before you go after his family. His brother is a cop, but in the same respect I know him to take his position seriously, even arresting a friend of the family when he could have looked the other way. John has his own offspring…but far from teenage years. He was in the military. His record w/ the law has been minor until this year. It’s sad to see him wrapped up in such a position, he’s always been a good kid in my book. As for the news papers they are creating more drama on the situation…. I feel sorry for both families & pray for them both.

This string of comments is appauling. I am a member oft he family and I will be the first person to say that near-to-no one knows the whole story. The press tells what they think will get the most reactions, responses, and ratings out of people. If you were in my families position you would understand.
