A Missouri lawmaker is making headlines with her proposal to require parents to notify schools if they own a gun.

State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal of St Louis County also wants to make failing to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands a crime. A news conference was scheduled Wednesday in Jefferson City.

The bill creates a new criminal offense of failing to stop illegal firearm possession.

The measure would make parents or guardians culpable if a child under 18 possesses a firearm and they fail to stop the possession or report it to law enforcement.

The offense would be a Class A misdemeanor unless death or injury results from the firearm possession in which case it is a Class D felony.

The bill would also create the offense of negligent storage of a firearm. Parents and guardians would be held accountable if a child under 18 years of age accesses a firearm and carries it to school, or uses it to commit a crime or kill or injure another person. That offense would be a Class A misdemeanor unless the child kills or injures another person in which case it is a Class D felony.

The measure also requires a parent or guardian to notify a school district, or the governing body of a private or charter school, that he or she owns a firearm within 30 days of enrolling the child in school or becoming the owner of a firearm. Failure to notify the school would be an infraction, punishable by a fines of from $100 to $1,000 depending on the outcomes.

So if a kid steals a gun from Walmart.. It’s now Walmarts fault?? Nope this law won’t go that way! Quit trying to punish the innocent, and start putting blame where it belongs.. ENTIRELY ON THE CRIMINAL!

AH, so it’s illegal for the grandkids to go hunting on thier own if this passes? What if the 16 year old causes death to a deer, does that make it a felony?

So we can put them in a car at that kills more people each year than guns 16 years old, but they can’t handle a gun untill 18? Yeah that makes pefect sense… So now we can’t teach our children to properly handle a weapon, can’t take them hunting, can’t protect them selfs when we are away. Search ” Montana girl kills home invaders” what would have happend to her if the parents never let her shoot a gun?

I think its a great idea – Worked great for the Nazi’s to have the felt gold star of david on the jackets of the students with parents who were Jewish. so they knew who to follow home and round up those with weapons, I mean Jewish parents. Or is it pretty much the same thing. Edmund Burke’s “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” Let’s not shall we????

It is already unlawful to knowingly sell, lease, loan, give away or deliver any firearm to a person who is not eighteen years old without the consent of the custodial parent or guardian. Now they want to specifically criminalize and define in?

As for mandatory reporting to schools, what’s the purpose? To profile parents? Treat children differently? Profile our children and target them as potentially more dangerous? Wouldn’t this “inspire” educators to overreact to a child’s day to day behaviors because of an identified increased risk factor of the home? Really! Is this where we are headed?

As it stands now, our government doesn’t even require us to register our guns. Nor do we have to have a license or permit to purchase one. I can see a need for a gun safety and responsible owner class. But I cannot agree with being targeted and profiled. This is absurd!

Great idea! The schools can publish the parents’ names and what kind of guns they have in the school directory so it will be easier for the criminals to know exactly what houses to rob. Get serious!!

Another great idea from someone who obviouslly supports a socialist state. It’s just another step for the government to have access to a record of gun owners to which our tyrannical leaders can iniate a seizure of property. This lady needs to wake up. America needs to wake up! Can’t you see that any new restrictions open up the flood gates for further legislation that will only make it harder for responsible law abiding citizens to actively engage in the support of our rights. This is not a Left or Right issue it is mearly a matter of principle and constitutional rights. I can go on and on but will finish with this… A bullet in the hand of a mentally ill person is too many, but 10 rounds in the hand of a single mother trying to protect her family from a home invasion isn’t enough. After all you don’t hear about the man in China who attacked 20+ people in a school with a knife. The AR in AR-15 does not stand for assault rifle. Guns are not weapons. The military has weapons. And suppoorted fully by the 2nd amendment would allow the U.S to rightfully take back our government. Don’t let the media scare you. Do your own homework. A celebrity influenced fascist can never be a true American leader.

I urge everyone reading this to contact your representatives and tell them to shut down the proposed legislation for Senate Bill #124! And support House Bill #170! Don’t you want your children, grandchildren, neices, nephews, sons and daughters to experience the same freedoms we so cherish today?
