Police have identified the woman who was killed in a three-vehicle accident in south St Joseph Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Matt Rock of the St Joseph Police Department says Joellen Abbott, 40, of St Joseph, was killed when her minivan was hit by a stolen pickup truck at 22nd Street and 11th Street Road.

Five other people were injured and required hospital treatment.

Rock said they suffered minor to moderate injuries.

Rock says the 16-year-old driver of the pickup truck, and another juvenile, are being held in juvenile detention pending an ongoing investigation into possible criminal charges in the case.

It’s not clear if the two suspects will face charges in juvenile or adult court.

Rock says the truck, a 1996 Chevy pickup, was reported stolen from rural Buchanan County earlier in the day Wednesday.

He says a police car had passed the stolen truck a few moments before the crash. The truck was reported to have been traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer was not following.

Criminal Adult Court!!!! Parents should be sued in Civil Court for the lack of disregard their deliquent had for another persons property and life. This was a persons Daughter, Wife, Mother, Friend. And because they wanted to be cool and run around acting like life doesn’t matter then they need to pay and pay dearly. And the parents of these kids are as much to blame as the teenagers.

    Adult!
They are old enough to have a driver’s license. They are old enough to know what they were doing was wrong and what the repercussions would be. They need to be treated as adults and not patted on the hands and told everything is all right. Tell that to JoEllen’s boys who are close in age, pat them on the hand and tell them everything is all right!

I feel that the driver should be treated as an adult on all the crimes committed and tried as an adult, as far as the passenger he should be charged as an adult for his part in the car theft but not for the lady loosing her life due to the fact that he was not driving and had no control over the bad choice that the driver made

It starts at home, someone has to lay down the law when they are young, not idle threats of punishment. This young lady was raised to respect others and raised her own children the same way. Don’t let them get away with murder!

You cannot always blame the parents of these kids. I have a kid that I have been literally BEGGING the juvenile system to get involved with but they refuse. He has assaulted me countless times, been arrested countless times and yet they refuse to help! Don’t come to me when he beats the hell out of his girlfriend. Don’t sue me then. Don’t try him as an adult because the system has failed him for years and would never help us!
Just one mom’s opinion. What happened was aweful and it NEVER should have happened. But keep in mind there is more than 1 tragic ending here and these ARE still kids and they do still have families with raw emotions. Let’s be respectful please.

I am also a mother of a kid that the JO office in St. Joseph pushed away for years. I tried everything. I did not know what to do other than keep trying. He was and is the biggest ass that I ever could meet. I could totally see half of the kids in St. Joe stealing a truck and taking it for a ride like these kids did. They are kids and do not have the mentality to know right from wrong in every case. They probally thought they were having fun knew they were gonna get caught and thought lets make the best before we go to Detention. I am most likely sure they did not set out to hurt anyone. They are kids its very sad what happened to Miss Abbot but there are 3 families involved here that everyone should take into consideration.

I’m sorry but you can’t tell me that in some form that the parents didn’t fail. Rather you know it or not odds are you lacked in the upbringing of your son rather it was due to the fact your mate was a scumbag, etc. It’s so easy to blame the “system”. People need to take responsibility for there pure lack of parenting and quit having kids. That idiot that was driving the truck should be tried as an adult. That juvenile made a life altering decision for that poor lady and her family so he should have to pay!

K, read the article more closely. The article states that the officer didn’t chase the vehicle causing the collision. It’s important that that’s made clear. Especially after the Country Club incident involving that moron cop. SJPD isn’t responsible for this.

This has nothing to do with the officer. Its solely the driver fault. You can’t blame others for what he did.

Maybe the police should take stolen vehicles more seriously. My son had his vehicle stolen from in front of their house and the police did absouletely nothing and told him that stolen vehicles were not a priority. When the vehicle was found there were clothes in it and other items that could have led to finding the idiots that stole the car…..but again the police did nothing…also told them it would take 2 years to find out anything with fingerprints….that is a lie ! Our hearts go out to this woman’s family. What a shame..

The police have not released this info yet, the kid was driving 90! I’m very close family to JoEllen, she was truly a GREAT person beyond words. She was also a VERY NEEDED person, one of her sons is wheel chair bound with ceberal palsy, the father has not been around for years! I was there when they told him what happened… I have never heard anyone scream the way that poor boy did. This was no ‘accident’ that kid KNEW very well that someone was probably going to be seriously injured or killed when he blew a stop sign going 90!!! He should be tried as a adult and for manslaughter as well!

The officer stopped following them because when cops chase people thru town, it makes them drive faster, and then innocent lives get caught in the cross fire while they’re fleeing arrest. It’s illegal now for the police dept to pursue cars in town, at high rates of speed, unless they know for a fact that the person is armed and dangerous, or that they are a convicted felon fleeing from justice, or both. I believe in my whole heart that these kids should be punished with all the powers that our justice system has. Everyone keeps saying “Oh the kids will have to live with it for the rest of their life” …. yes but so will HER CHILDREN. Honestly, I pray for the victims family, I pray the poor mother and that she did not suffer, and I pray that these kids get what they deserve. It’s blatant disregard for the law, for other people’s lives, and for society in general that get innocent people killed all the time. They deserve to serve a punishment that is extensive, if not it will send a message to the kids in our community that if you are under the age of 17, and you want to steal a truck…go for it, cuz even if you kill someone…you won’t get charged. Please Buchanan County…DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NEGLIGENCE! SEND A MESSAGE to the young children of this community!
