The St. Joseph Mustangs closed the home portion of their regular season with a 3-1 win over Nevada inside Phil Welch Stadium.
St. Joe’s summer college baseball team has now won six consecutive games as they improve to 37-9 and 31-9 in the MINK League. The Mustangs went 23-4 at home during the regular season.
Nevada struck first in the third inning Saturday night with one run, but St. Joseph answered right back in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game on an RBI ground out from Jon Wegener.
The score remained tied until the seventh inning when Mustangs’ catcher and Central graduate Landinn Eckhardt hit a sacrifice fly to score Shane Segovia.
St. Joe added one run of insurance in the eighth inning as Brent Seifert scored on a wild pitch.
Mustangs’ starter Adam Maddox (4-1) went seven innings to earn the win. He allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out four and walking one. Doug Shields worked the ninth inning for his 10th save of the season.
St. Joseph is back on the road Sunday as they play at Clarinda. The first pitch is at 7:30 p.m. and you can hear the game on ESPN 1550.
